7 Questions To Ask Before You Join An MLM

If you Join an MLM, it should not be an emotional decision. You should evaluate the company and yourself. You should know what the company is all about and why you want to do this. Before you join an MLM company, you should understand that are starting your own business. It is a big step. If you don’t know anything about the company and you can’t figure out why you want to do this, don’t do it.

What To Ask before You Join An MLM

OK, let’s assume you are ready to start looking at MLM companies. Here are 7 questions that must be answered to your satisfaction.

1. It is a pyramid scheme? A Network Marketing company that has no product or service to sell can only make money by signing people up. This is a pyramid scheme. Some regulators also say that a company with a very simple product at a very high price may also pyramid scheme also. Product sales is where residual income comes from. This entire revenue stream missing from pyramid schemes; they are also illegal. You must know this before you join an MLM.

2. How long have they been in business? A brand new Network marketing/ MLM company can be successful, but one that has been in business for a while is a safer bet. Do not join an MLM until you know this as well as your own tolerance for risk. MLM’s are no different than a traditional business in this respect. I would recommend at least 2 years in business, and I actually like 5 years better. They have an even better shot at being on solid financial ground.

3. Is the product or service valuable? Is it something people would want to buy? Would you want to buy it if you were not in the company? If you don’t want it, why would anyone else? Why would you join an MLM business if you didn’t like the product? Is the product or service overpriced? Can it be bought for a lot less money somewhere else? If the product is priced higher, can it be justified?

4. What are your costs? There are 2 types of cost. The upfront cost to join an MLM, and the cost to stay in one. Is it too high? Is there a way join with a lower initial cost and move up as your income increases? What is the monthly cost? Remember you will have to purchase some of the MLM company’s products every month.

5. Is there a good Residual Income? This comes from the money distributors and customers pay for products and/or services. Will the products or services sustain an ongoing residual income or are they a one time shot? As you move up through the company, how soon can you see significant residual income? The biggest reason to join an MLM is residual income. Don’t do it unless you get answers you like.

6. Inventory? If the MLM you are looking at sells products, are you required to keep an inventory of products in your home? Must you pay for them all at once? What is the policy about selling inventory?

Don’t Join An MLM If You Don’t Understand Marketing

7. Can your upline teach and train you? There are 2 areas you’ll need training with. The company itself, and marketing. You will have to know about the company’s, products and/or services, pricing, how to use your back office, etc. These are the day to day business aspects of the company. How about marketing? Are you going to be an Attraction Marketer or a traditional marketer, or some of each? What if your upline uses an Attraction Marketing System and you don’t want to? Is your direct upline OK with what you want? If not, you should look for another upline. If your direct upline is OK with it, develop a good relationship, because you will work closely with this person. Do not join an MLM if you don’t think you can work with your direct upline.

Joining an MLM business is much more than signing some papers and going out on your own. Before you “join an MLM”, know the company. Understand marketing. And most important, know who you will be working with.

The Best MLM Opportunity

Many Network Marketers will tell you that the MLM company they represent is the best MLM opportunity in the world and you need to join. You will hear it has the only product of its kind, or it has the best compensation plan ever devised, or get in now while you still can. Watch out for these folks. They are centered on themselves when they should be centered on you. Even if they are centered on you, learn what it is all about. The best MLM opportunity for one person could be a black hole for someone else.

What Does The Best MLM Opportunity Look Like?

How is this opportunity being presented to you? Are they talking upfront income and cash flow or long term residual income? As a potential Network Marketer your main focus should be on residual income. I’m not saying you can’t create a cash flow in this business, but the #1 reason people get involved in the industry is for a consistent, reliable, long term income. That kind of income is a wonderful thing. If the person presenting the company to you doesn’t mention it much, you may want to look elsewhere.

As a Network Marketing opportunity seeker, you should understand that an MLM company does 2 things. They sell products and/or services, and they offer business opportunities to those who are looking to improve their financial situation. That’s all. So when you’re looking for the best MLM opportunity for you, first look at the product or service they offer. Is it something you are comfortable with? Can you get enthusiastic about it? Will you even use it? If you don’t like the product or service, how are you going to be able to promote it? Are the products/services something that people can easily use month after month? The last thing you want to base a long term income on is a fad. Product or service is very important when looking for the best MLM opportunity.

What about the company itself? Take a look at the leadership. What is their track record? Do they have legal issues? State and Federal regulators are becoming more aggressive in looking at companies that don’t sell products or services outside their own organization. They are also looking at companies that pay a lot up front when people sign up, but not so much when people buy products and services. The compensation plan is important as well, but don’t be overly influenced by a good comp plan with a lousy product. It is actually better to have a great product and an average comp plan. The best MLM opportunity will have good products and a good comp plan. Don’t settle for just one. Don’t forget the person you sign up with, either. Can they lead and train you to be successful? What resources do they have? This is a person you’ll need to work closely with.

What Does The Best MLM Opportunity Mean to You?

What about you? You are the most important part of this whole thing. What exactly do you want? What are your skill sets? Are you a traditional Network Marketer or an Attraction Marketer? Do you even know what that means at this point? Will you listen to a Mentor? Make sure your marketing style fits with your upline’s style.

By now you have seen that the “best MLM opportunity” is a very personal choice. Something good for you may not be good for someone else. Don’t be swayed by fast talk or high pressure. You are talking about changing your life here. Relax and make a decision based on reason, not emotion. When looking for the best MLM opportunity, the focus should be on you, not the company or their distributors.

Top Tier or MLM – What’s the Difference?

You have finally decided it is time to be your own boss. You want to start your own home based business. You’re looking at Network Marketing, or MLM, and you run across something called Top Tier. What is Top Tier? How is it different from MLM? There are similarities and differences in how they work. People can be very successful in either one. And people can fail in either one.

Each business model – Top Tier and MLM – has a product or service to sell, as well as making a business opportunity available. There are pyramid schemes around too, but they are characterized by not having a real product or service available, so we will ignore them for now. Top Tier and MLM pay you for a sale you make, and each one will pay you for sales from the levels below you. That’s about it for similarities, but there are several differences.

One big difference is the target market. Although they can overlap, Top Tier companies generally target a more affluent market than MLM. Top Tier companies market higher priced products. They can go from around $1000 to close to $15,000. As you might imagine, commissions are higher. For example, a $3,500 sale might get you $1,000 or 1,200 in commission. Of course, you don’t make as many sales. But with enough people, it is possible to make six figures per month. The products are usually a one time sale, perhaps an annual meeting at a very nice resort somewhere in the world, perhaps a membership of some kind. The products tend to be instructional in nature; financial, personal development, internet marketing and the like. In order to be a viable business, the products must be cutting edge stuff. Even though Top Tier companies can pay you from multiple levels, it is not a traditional Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) compensation plan. That’s because true Network Marketing, with a true MLM compensation plan, is designed to create residual income. Top Tier does not. A brand new sale has to be made somewhere in your organization in order for you to get paid.

MLM, on the other hand, can cost only $100 to $500 to get in and can run from $40 to $250+ per month in product or service purchases. MLM purchases are not one-time things. You, your downline team, and customers purchase and use the product every month. You usually get paid from people who join the business, but the real wealth comes from the residual income. This is generated by product sales to customers and though the people below you in your downline team. Many successful MLMers make six figures per month in residual income. If your residual income is high enough, you may not even need to do any of your own marketing. You help the people below you – your team. A good Top Tier downline team may be measured in hundreds of people, while a good MLM downline team is measured in thousands of people.

At first glance it may seem impossible to build a team of hundreds of people, much less thousands. In the days before powerful computers and the internet it was difficult. Now it is much easier, especially if you use an Attraction Marketing System. This is a system that shows you how to use all the tools that are available to you: the internet, blogs, websites, video, and much more. Most of the people who use these systems are no more than average computer users. Some of us may not even be that good. The point is this: MLM and Top Tier are real opportunities, and there are real tools to help you. Don’t let fear of technology hold you back.

MLM Doesn’t Have To Be Nutrition Or Cosmetics

If you are under the impression that Network Marketing/MLM companies are mostly nutrition or cosmetics based, you are right. In fact, 70% of the top 50 (by sales volume) MLM/Network Marketing companies are health and/or cosmetics based. But it doesn’t have to be that way if you are not motivated in the health or beauty area. When you look at the top 100, that number drops to 55%.

In any business, Network Marketing or something else, you want to stand out from the crowd. Your product may not be the same as another product in the same field, but if people believe it is the same, then it is the same. It has then become a commodity. And the major thing that differentiates two different brands of the same commodity is price. Unless you’re Wal-Mart, that’s not the place to be. And I’ll bet you’re not Wal-Mart.

Creating value is the way to beat price competition. That is difficult to do if you are perceived as part of a faceless mob. It is much easier to do as part of a group of 4 or 5 than as part of a group of 40 or 50. If your product does have unique properties or benefits, it is easier to make the distinction in a small group. If it doesn’t, you can still bring value in other ways. That value will be easier to show as part of a smaller group.

Remember that MLM/Network Marketing companies do 2 things. They sell products and/or services, and they offer a business opportunity. A good Attraction Marketing System can help you create value in both of those areas. Bringing value and creating trust are big steps in building relationships with customers and people you have brought into your business. Your ability to do this sets you apart from the crowd.

There is a large number of MLM health and beauty companies because they are both very large markets. But don’t believe that you must join a nutrition or cosmetics company to be successful in MLM. If that’s where your interest lies, go for it. If your interest is not in that area, remember there are many alternatives. It’s just a matter of doing some research and asking the right questions.
